Teacher : All right. What would you do if you were the president? Let’s see, Student A?
Student A: If I were the president, I would lay a heavy tax on rich people.
Everyone: (laughs)
Teacher: Ah, OK, that’s a great idea.
Student A: Um, I would use this tax to decrease college fees.
Everyone: Ah.
Teacher: Ah, very nice. I think that’s a great idea. Yeah, so, yeah, uh, tuition, college fees is very interesting. And actually Student B talked about free colleges as well. Yeah, that’s a great idea. They have more money, so they should pay more tax. Definitely. OK, anybody else, Student C, what’s your idea? What would you do?
Student C: If I were the prime minister of Japan, I would try my best to make good terms with China.
Teacher: OK, yeah. In Europe, we’ve had lots of history of fighting, but we stopped, and now we have good trade, and countries get along very well. I know
you’ve had a long history as well, but I really hope Japan and China can act peacefully together.
Student C: Yeah.
Teacher: Ah, let’s see, Student D, what’s your idea, what would you do if you were the president?
Student D: Well, buy some technology from Japan and use it to get money.
Teacher: OK. So, sell more technology to other countries?
Student D: Oops, yeah, sell.
Teacher: Yeah. There’s some, actually your Shinkansen, your bullet train is being sold to many different countries at the moment. That’s a good example of trade. Cars are a big industry in Japan. Like Honda and Toyota, they’re all doing well in other countries. That’s a good idea. OK.
