British Hills

(The Person Whom I Respect)

(Student A)
I went to British Hills because I wanted to become a good English speaker.  Before going to British Hills, I was not good at speaking English.  Now I think my pronunciation is getting better and better after going to British Hills.
Keeping on communicating is important.  I learned it at British Hills.  At first I couldn’t speak English a lot because I tried to use difficult grammar.  I was mistaken grammatically.  But my teacher understood what I meant.  Then I realized that I didn’t have to use difficult grammar.  And I felt that it’s not good to stop conversation.  When I stopped to think about English grammar, my teacher was in trouble.  So I noticed that the important thing is keeping on communicating.
After going to British Hills, I like English much better.  From now on, I will study English hard and I want to become a better English speaker.

(Student B)
I enjoyed staying at British Hills.  I was very nervous before I had the first lesson.  But the teachers were kind and spoke in simple English.
I got a lot of experience.  Speech classes were the best.  Giving a speech was my weak point before then.  I had no eye contact skills or no body language skills.  But now, I can give a speech well.  I was happy to win the third prize in a speech contest.
I want to go abroad in the future.  I’m interested in learning other cultures.  I think this trip was too short for us to learn the real English. So I want to go abroad.

(Student C)
I had been interested in British culture.  When I knew British Hills, I thought that would be a nice chance to learn about Britain and make progress in my English speech skills.  So I decided to go to British Hills.
At British Hills, I was able to learn a lot of things.  But the most important things that I learned are “Body language is very important when we give a speech” and “Making mistakes is not bad.” In “Speech Skills” my teacher said, “Body language makes people look interesting and positive.”  So we practiced how to use body language.  But I wasn’t able to use body language well in my speech.  I want to practice more and use it well.
I think this experience will help me to give a presentation in the future.  And this experience will change my life more positive.

(Student D)
I came to British Hills to improve my English skills.  But before going to British Hills, I was a little worried, for I was afraid if I could understand English that was spoken by the native speakers.  But after arriving at British Hills, my worries went away.  The staffs in British Hills were kind enough to speak very slowly for us.  So I could try using English.
By the way, whcultures and languages among America, Britain, and Japan, for example.  But what at I learned at British Hills are many; speech skills and differences in I remember the most clearly is “not to be ashamed of making mistakes.”  I was always ashamed of making mistakes, but I learned that mistakes will make me grow.  That will change my life.  I had many powerful and valuable experiences at British Hills.  I will make use of these experiences.

(Student E)
Before I went to British Hills, I didn’t want to go there.  I thought if I join this, I must spend my time studying English during the summer vacation.  But my parents made me go there.
But now I think it was very good experience.  During this trip, I had many chances to talk with native English speakers.  I couldn’t understand all of their words, but I tried to have a communication.  To talk with foreigners was very interesting.
Through this trip I made progress in English.  I really enjoyed this trip and learned a lot from this experience.  I was happy to join British Hills.

(Student F)
I was happy to go to British Hills and study British culture and manners.  I could improve my English skills.  Actually I was afraid of talking with native speakers.  I tried to speak English in a loud voice.  But I was not able to do that at first.  My voice was small.  The next day, our teacher taught us how to give a speech in English.  The important things are a loud voice, body language, eye contact, and clear voice.  I practiced my speech harder.  On the last day, I gave my speech.  I did my speech in a loud voice.  But I couldn’t use body language.  I was disappointed with this result.  I want to study body language harder.
It was a good experience for me to go to British Hills.  I want to say, “Thank you for everything on British Hills.”

(Student G)
On the first day, I was very nervous to study English at British Hills.  So I was not able to speak a lot of English or speak loudly in classes.  But I learned a very important thing.  That is to speak a lot of English even if I can’t speak well.  I said to myself, “I will make an effort to do everything that helps me make progress in English.  For that reason, I have come to British Hills!”
From the second day, I did my best to make progress in English.  I tried to speak a lot of English and speak it loudly in classes.  Then, I felt that I could make myself understood by everyone.  It was very nice!
I think that British Hills made my English life much better.

 教員からのメッセージ

(Teacher A)
As a teacher responsible for this camp, I feel very happy to be able to finish this first-ever English event by Toho in such a big success.  To be honest, I was not even sure if students would actually take part in this camp… what would I have done if there were very few participants!?
From your comments on this camp, I can understand that you have especially enjoyed the “Speech Skills” lesson, comparing American and British culture, the British atmosphere, and of course, the English lessons!  Many of you must have had a hard time participating in classes at first, but on the last day, you all looked very confident.  You were listening, and speaking in class.  Some of you even told me that you wanted to stay longer!  Please feel proud of your positive attitude and progress you have made!  You were all great!
Now, whether your experience at British Hills is going to be useful in your future or not is up to you.  This is only your start of becoming a global citizen.  Please be active in your English classes at Toho.  Use your motivation.  And, what’s more, try to use English in your real life, if possible, overseas.  There are many things you don’t know yet in the world, and I’m sure you can find something new and interesting you will never forget.
Thank you for your participation, and wish you all the best in your bright future with English coming up!

(Teacher B)
Joe said, “You made history.” In that hall echoed his voice on the last day. Yes. I thought so, too. But we understand his words in two ways. One is, of course, you were the first Toho students to take part in the off-campus activities at British Hills. Not only this. We can choose which road to take in the course of our lives, which might need a little courage. Yes, you made your own choice to join this activity with “a little courage” and expectation. And now all of you’ve taken a successful step and opened the door towards a new stage: You made “your own” history.
I feel very proud of you! You enjoyed spontaneous communication in English. That was something more than I had expected. “Speech Skills” was also fabulous. All of you marked a big success in the presentation where lots of gestures and eye contacts were needed. Many of you asked the presenters questions, which led to genuine communication. Also I truly felt your passion in your strong voice. I truly hope you will be leaders not only at Toho but in our global society.
The step that you took this time might be small, but your experience of this time will surely have a great impact on your life and lead to your great confidence. I really hope so. Thank you.
